Inedible!? Be captivated by glass sweets created by an artist

Dec 3, 2017

"PÂTISSERIE" is an art series based on the concept of "unfulfilled desire." These works, which look just like real sweets, are made entirely from glass and ceramic. They were created by American glass artist Shayna Leib. She fell in love with the sweets at first sight after watching an episode of her favorite British cooking show, where they featured entremets (puddings or other desserts served after a meal). However, she is allergic to substances such as histamine, salicylate, and copper, which prevents her from eating sweets. So Shayna decided to view the sweets from the perspective of their physical beauty. She iterated on this idea over and over again in her studio.

The production process is quite elaborate. The main materials used are glass and ceramic, which cannot be heated or combined at the same time. Furthermore, around 10 different types of glass alone are used, but as each has different properties it is difficult to process them simultaneously. In other words, the parts needed to create a single piece are all made of different materials, so each requires separate work. Furthermore, just to assemble the finished parts requires several hours of sanding. Utilizing the many techniques essential to glasswork and ceramics, the final product is so realistic and beautiful that it could be mistaken for a dessert that a pastry chef had just skillfully created.

Seeing the works lined up all over the wall shows Shayna's confidence in being able to perfectly realize this conceptual project, and it gives me a sense of fulfillment. You can see many of the works in her "Patisserie" series on her website, so be sure to check it out.
