The "Musha Exhibition," a celebration of the 10th anniversary of the National Art Center, Tokyo and the Czech Cultural Year, will be held in the National Art Center, Tokyo's Special Exhibition Gallery 2E in Roppongi, Tokyo, from March 8 to June 5, 2017. Alphonse Mucha was born in Moravia, Austria, and was active in Paris. He first gained fame at the age of 34 with the poster for the play "Gismonda," starring actress Sarah Bernhardt. Since then, he has captivated audiences with his gorgeous and sophisticated posters and decorative panels, featuring beautiful female figures and graceful botanical motifs. Mucha also produced numerous works that explored the identity of his native Czech Republic and his Slavic roots. Over the course of his final 17 years, he created his masterpiece, "The Slavic Epic," as a culmination of his work. This exhibition, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations with Mucha's home country of the Czech Republic, will display all 20 pieces from "The Slavic Epic" together for the first time outside of the Czech Republic. Painted on massive canvases measuring up to 6 meters high and 8 meters wide, the works draw you into a famous scene from a play. This exhibition also showcases Mucha's journey from his time in Paris to painting "The Slavic Epic" through approximately 100 pieces. Also on display will be posters and lithographs of "Gismonda," the work that made Mucha famous. Limited-time special pair tickets are available for 2,300 yen until November 30th.
