Discover the secrets of legendary New York photographer Saul Leiter. Japan's first retrospective exhibition will be held next spring.

Nov 25, 2016

The first-ever Japanese retrospective of legendary New York photographer Saul Leiter, "Photographer Saul Leiter," will run from April 29 to June 25, 2017, at Bunkamura The Museum in Shibuya, Tokyo. Leiter was a leading fashion photographer in New York since the 1950s, but closed his studio at age 58, retired from commercial photography, and disappeared from the public eye. However, a collection of his works, published by Steidl in Germany, brought him back into the spotlight, and the 2012 documentary film "Photographer Saul Leiter: 13 Lessons Learned from a Slow Life," brought his name and work to even greater public recognition. With the full cooperation of the Saul Leiter Foundation in New York, this upcoming exhibition, the first of its kind in Japan, brings together over 200 valuable materials, including black-and-white and color photographs and paintings from the foundation's collection.
