"Painting and Weaving: Yohji Yamamoto and Yuka Asakura" Exhibition Exploring the Essence of Yohji Yamamoto, Showcasing Unreleased Paintings and Sculptures

Oct 30, 2016

"Painting and Weaving: Yohji Yamamoto & Yuka Asakura," an exhibition exploring the allure and essence of designer Yohji Yamamoto, will run from December 10th to March 12th, 2017, at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
Yamamoto Yohji has recently been actively developing collaborative works with painting. The title of this exhibition, "Painting and Weaving," was conceived by editorial engineer Seigo Matsuoka at Yamamoto's request. "Painting" (ga) means painting, while "weaving" (ki) means momentum, opportunity, and weaving (clothing). These two characters express relationships, revealing a dangerous relationship that touches the very roots of creativity, such as painting and fashion, two-dimensional and three-dimensional, or man and woman, where repulsion yet attraction, mutual inescapability, touches upon the very essence of creativity.
The exhibition will explore the allure and essence of Yamamoto, who continues to develop innovative creations after more than 40 years of career. The exhibition will feature paintings and sculptures created by Yamamoto specifically for the exhibition. The space, lined with mannequins with unusually shaped bodies, dressed in clothes of their own accord, completely betrays the expectations of those who came prepared for a fashion exhibition. Also on display are works by young artist Asakura Yuka, who has collaborated with Yohji Yamamoto for several seasons since the 2016 Spring/Summer Men's and Women's Collections. This is an opportunity to experience the clash, fusion, disappointment, conflict, fleeting moment, change, yearning, and eternal moment of "painting and machine."
