"New Movement" exhibition at Aoyama Spiral Garden, AR Three Brothers and Rhizomatiks research participation

Nov 4, 2016

To celebrate its 100th anniversary, NSK will hold the "NSK 100th Anniversary Exhibition: SENSE OF MOTION" from November 9th to 20th at Spiral Garden in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo.
NSK is a global company that has primarily manufactured bearings that control "motion." To celebrate its 100th anniversary in November, the company will be implementing new initiatives over the next 10 years under the theme "Setting the Future in Motion."
As part of this initiative, this exhibition will feature NSK working with creators to exhibit "new movement" that evokes new senses. Works by six creators will be on display, including designer Takeshi Ishiguro's circular chair, which incorporates thousands of bearings, aluminum, a spring structure, and a built-in ball screw, allowing the chair to gently rotate and descend when sat on. French architect Emmanuel Moureaux will exhibit a spectacular piece in which a 6-meter-tall floral handkerchief made of colorful paper fills the atrium of Spiral Garden. Sound artist and product designer Yuri Suzuki, working with SLOW LABEL, a company committed to creating unique products both in Japan and overseas, proposed a musical instrument that can be played collaboratively by diverse people. Artists Toru Nakazaki and Daisuke Yamashiro, along with art manager Tomoko Noda, created a human-powered merry-go-round that uses bearings on its rotating axis. Rhizomatiks Research, a creative collective, exhibited a dynamic sculpture in which a ball screw expresses the smooth movement of human movement. Development unit AR Three Brothers created a piece that allows visitors to enter a box, pick up an item, and virtually see the work of bearings used in a variety of situations, including those involving visitors, ships, helicopters, satellites, land, sea, air, and space.
