Must-visit Italian Gelato Shops in Milan (Porta Romana and Cinque Giornate Areas) [From Cities: Admiring the Cities of the World Vol. 14]

Jul 29, 2021

In our series [From cities: Admiring the cities of the world], we bring you the latest local information on cities around the world, such as Paris, Milan, New York, etc., notable addresses, and real city snaps! For a while, we will be sending you articles with the hope that in the near future, when we are able to travel abroad freely again, we will visit those places.

In this 14th installment, we continue to focus on recommended "exquisite Italian gelato shops" in Milan, Italy.

Milan is made up of many different districts, and there are currently around 800 gelaterias in Milan, with recommended shops scattered throughout each district. As such, this project has been divided into three articles, each introducing a different area. This article is the third and final installment. Following on from the Duomo District and Naviglio and Porta Venezia District editions, we bring you the Porta Romana and Cinque Giornate District edition.

Don't miss the taste reports at each store by our staff based in Milan! Check it out now.

01. "Sioli e Bissoli" [Porta Romana District]
A hidden gem of a gelateria, popular with locals

Flavors: Hazelnut, Chocolate (Small size 3.00€)
"Sioli e Bissoli" is a gelateria that opened four years ago. The owner is a bit eccentric, and has no interest in winning awards or recognition. Of course, his gelato-making skills are top-notch. That's why the shop is bustling with locals every day. If you're looking for a hidden gem a little outside of central Milan, this is the place to go.

《From: Milan-based staff》
The flavors change with the seasons, so every time I visit I'm always excited to see what's on the menu. This time, I chose hazelnut and chocolate, two flavors that are incredibly popular among Italians. The rich milk, hazelnut, and chocolate flavors are indescribable and smooth. Apparently fruit sorbets are also popular in the summer, but I personally recommend the cream-based options! If you're not sure which flavor to choose, they offer tastings, so it might be fun to try something new each time.

02. "Pavè" [Cinque Giornate Region]
Sip and Taste, Try the Granita

Granita (3 flavors: strawberry, peach, and almond + topping of fresh cream-flavored gelato / M size 3.00€)
"Pavè" is a gelateria that was born from a pasticceria (confectionery/cake shop).

The gelato makes use of the unique ideas of a pasticceria, and comes in a variety of flavors that you won't find anywhere else, such as mille-feuille, peanut, and mascarpone.

While simply ordering gelato is fine, if you visit the shop, you should definitely check out this "granita." While granitas typically come in lemon or mint flavors, this shop offers peach, strawberry, and almond flavors. Unlike shaved ice, this granita is savory and delicious. Definitely give it a try.

《From: Staff Based in Milan》
Usually, you choose one flavor for your granita, but I really wanted to try three, so I asked if they could put all the flavors in one cup. They gave me strawberry, peach, and almond flavors, and even topped it with fresh cream gelato. When sipped through a straw, the three flavors create an indescribable harmony. The not-too-sweet, mixed flavor is irresistible. Although I was a little skeptical when I ordered it, I can confidently recommend this mix of three flavors! It's best to order the flavors in order of strength, so be sure to ask for the strawberry flavor to be poured into your cup first.

03. "Alberto Marchetti" [Cinque Giornate Region]
Coffee-flavored gelato made with carefully selected ingredients

Flavors: Espresso coffee, white chocolate, zabaione (medium size 3.50€)
Be sure to try the unusual white chocolate flavor.

Alberto Marchetti is a gelateria with its main store in Turin, Italy. The store is committed to using ingredients and production methods recommended by Slow Food (*1), and the owner, Alberto, who truly loves gelato, continues to make high-quality gelato.

By the way, "Nitro Gelato Affogato," which can only be enjoyed at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery that opened in Milan in 2018, is a gelato created by Alberto Marchetti. This shop is also recommended for those who want to enjoy gelato made with carefully selected ingredients.

*1: Slow food is an international social movement advocated by Italian Carlo Petrini in 1986. It was advocated as a counterpart to fast food, and refers to a movement to reexamine traditional local food culture and ingredients, or the food itself.

《From: Staff living in Milan》
This time, we chose the coffee flavor, the store's recommended white chocolate flavor, and the Zabaione flavor. The coffee and white chocolate flavors match perfectly, creating a taste that is perfect for adults. If you'd like to enjoy a coffee at this shop, why not try a float-style order, with a mini gelato on top of an espresso?
