Jul 29, 2021

In our series [From cities: Admiring the cities of the world], we bring you the latest local information on cities around the world, such as Paris, Milan, New York, etc., notable addresses, and real city snaps! For a while, we will be sending you articles with the hope that in the near future, when we are able to travel abroad freely again, we will visit those places.

Following on from the previous installment, this 13th installment focuses on recommended "exquisite Italian gelato shops" in Milan, Italy.

Milan is made up of many different districts, and there are currently around 800 gelaterias in Milan, with recommended shops scattered throughout each district. As such, this project is divided into three articles, each introducing a different area. This article is the second in the series. Following on from the previous article on the Duomo District, we bring you the Naviglio and Porta Venezia District Edition.

01. "Gusto 17" [Naviglio District]
For a limited time, we're offering collaboration flavors with fashion brands.

Flavor: Greek Yogurt, Peach (1 cup S2.80€)
After enjoying your gelato, we recommend taking a leisurely stroll around Naviglio.

"Gusto 17" is a stylish gelateria befitting the fashion capital of Milan. Every September during women's fashion week, they offer limited-edition flavors in collaboration with maison brands like Armani and Fendi, and are also popular as a gelateria where fashionistas gather. Their stylish pastel-colored exterior is a sure sign. Gusto 17 currently has two stores in Milan, and its gelaterias are also available at Aimo a Nadia cafe in front of La Scala, Eataly, and La Rinascente.

Flavor: Amarena Dark Cherry, Ginger (S2.80€ per cone)
Flavor: Pistachio, Cheesecake (S2.80€ per cone)
Flavors: Sicilian brioche, pistachio, vanilla, strawberry (each brioche costs 4.00€)
Brioche sandwiched with three types of gelato in the colors of the Italian flag

《From: Staff based in Milan》
This is my favorite gelato and I'm a repeat customer. My top recommendation is the pistachio and cheesecake. The flavor of Sicilian pistachios is paired with a hint of salt, making this the perfect gelato, with a perfect balance of sweet and salty. On hot days, you'll want to replenish your salt intake. This is a dish I especially recommend for those days. If you're feeling a little hungry, try gelato sandwiched in a Sicilian brioche. This is a must-see if you're in Milan.

02. "Latte Neve" [Naviglio District]
Open until midnight on weekends during the summer season.

Flavors: Black sesame, rose (Small 2.90€)
Latte Neve is a gelateria that specializes in organic ingredients. The recommended flavors at the store are black sesame, which suits Japanese tastes, and rose, which uses flowers. The rose flavor is a delicate gelato that not only delights the palate, but also allows you to enjoy the scent of roses. On summer weekends, they're open until midnight, so it's a great place to enjoy gelato after dinner!

Flavor: Raspberry, Passion Fruit (Small size 2.90€)
《From: Staff based in Milan》
This time, we chose black sesame and rose flavor, which is hard to find in other stores. Black sesame is a must-order, as it suits Japanese tastes very well. The rose flavor is a moist, adult gelato that is slightly sweet and has a pleasant rose scent. The staff even topped it with flower petals. For those who want to enjoy the refreshing flavor of fruit, we recommend the raspberry and passion fruit flavors. The fruit flavors are lactose-free, so they can be safely enjoyed by those with allergies or who are vegan.

03. "Out of the box" [Porta Venezia District]
A popular restaurant among discerning Milanese.

Flavors: Mango, strawberry, yogurt (S size 2.9€, M size 3.6€, L size 4.5€)
*The order in the photo is a M size

Since opening in 2015, Out of the Box has been a gluten-free, lactose-free gelato and bar that makes gelato using fresh ingredients daily using traditional methods. With a variety of gelato that makes the most of the ingredients and a stylish storefront, the shop has quickly become popular among Milanese people with discerning eyes and palates.

《From: Staff living in Milan》
It was a hot day, so I chose three flavors that I thought would have a refreshing taste: mango, strawberry, and yogurt. The mango and strawberry flavors taste like you're eating the fruit itself. The yogurt flavor has a very creamy yogurt texture! It was so delicious that it made the heat disappear. The prices are higher than your average gelateria, but the flavor makes sense!

04. "Gelato Giusto" [Porta Venezia District]
One of Milan's leading gelaterias, recognized by Gambero Rosso for six consecutive years.

Flavors: Melon, Stracciatella (S size 2.2€, M size 2.8€, L size 3.5€)
The photo shows the S size

"Gelato Giusto" is a gelateria opened in 2009 by owner Vittoria, who trained in London and Paris at places like Le Cordon Bleu and Ladurée, at the age of 22. The shop specializes in the delicacy that only an owner well-versed in French pastries can have, as well as methods that make use of ingredients unique to Italy, and unusual flavor combinations.

In 2020, it won two cones in the Gambero Rosso gelato category. A regular in Milan's top 10 gelaterias, it has had six years of Gambero Rosso certification stickers displayed in a corner of its store, dating back to the 2015 edition.

《From: Milan-based staff》
This time, we chose two flavors: today's recommended melon flavor, and stracciatella flavor (milk gelato topped with chocolate chips). The seasonal melon flavor is so fresh that you can even taste the subtle bitterness of the melon. Stracciatella is a rich, satisfying combination of milk and chocolate chips. The menu at this shop is made with seasonal ingredients, resulting in a constantly changing variety of flavors, making it a place you'll want to visit again and again.
