ATELIER MUJI GINZA (MUJI Ginza store, Chuo-ku, Tokyo) will be holding the exhibition "Live Longer. The Case of the Windsor Chair: 10 Years of the Windsor Department" in Gallery 1 and 2 from May 14 to July 4, 2021.

How many chairs will we encounter and sit on in our lives? The type of chair we share our lives with is different for each person. And surely everyone has a "memorable chair" in their heart.

In 2019, ATELIER MUJI GINZA held the exhibition "Live Longer. The Case of the Windsor Chair: 10 Years of the Windsor Department." "The Windsor Chair," an exhibition showcasing the evolution of the "DNA" of bentwood chairs, exemplified by Thonet, was held in 2014. This year, we will focus on the Windsor chair, another key component of long-lasting chairs, and introduce the activities of the Windsor Department, a group formed in 2011 by three designers fascinated by the world of Windsor: Taiji Fujimori, DRILL DESIGN, and INODA+SVEJE. The Windsor chair is said to have originated in Windsor and its surrounding areas in England in the late 17th century, where joiners began making it as a practical chair for ordinary people's homes and farmhouses. Windsor chair researcher Ivan Sparks defines it as "a chair with a thick wooden seat as the base, with the legs and spindles directly attached to the seat." Regardless of the exact definition, the chair possesses a mysterious power that evokes a sense of nostalgia when you see it.

2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the launch of Windsor Department. The project is a research group exploring the shape, atmosphere, and indescribable charm of the Windsor chair—what defines its "Windsor-ness." Each of the three groups has used their own approach to create a modern Windsor chair. It's also noteworthy that the project values "redesign," evolving a single chair prototype and connecting it to the future.

This exhibition will showcase documents and models that offer a glimpse into the Windsor Department's thought process, the 10 chairs they created, and even historic Windsor chairs redesigned by their predecessors.

In today's world, design is often thought of as the creation of entirely new forms. Their method, which involves evolving a single chair's "prototype" like a tree through the designer's thinking (trials), liberates us from the conventional framework of "design" and takes us to a more sustainable dimension. This exhibition is a nostalgic yet new workshop for "redesign," weaving time and memory into form.
