The largest MUJI house in Japan. The first in the country to offer a tour of the "Wooden House," "Window House," and "Sun House" at the Kumamoto store has opened.

Jun 6, 2021
MUJI HOUSE Co., Ltd., operator of the MUJI House brand, will open the MUJI House Kumamoto model house, operated by Lib Work Co., Ltd., a MUJI House network partner, on June 4th.

The Kumamoto store is the largest MUJI House store, spanning approximately 2300m2 (approx. 2300sqm), and is the first store in Japan where visitors can simultaneously view three of the company's products: the Wooden House, the Window House, and the Sun House. The model houses are spaciously positioned on the spacious site, allowing visitors to fully experience the features and concepts of each product. The facility also features walkways that allow visitors to wander around, and the lush exterior and landscaping, designed to further enhance the MUJI House worldview, are a highlight.

In order to realize the high-performance homes that will be required in the future, MUJI Houses use double insulation as standard, combining external insulation and filled insulation for the exterior walls. The insulation performance of the model houses has achieved UA values of "0.47" for the Wooden House, "0.37" for the Window House, and "0.41" for the Sun House.

In addition, all MUJI House buildings are earthquake-resistant to "Seismic Grade 3," and the SE construction method they use joins columns and beams made of "structural laminated timber," which has a known strength, with "SE metal fittings," making it possible to perform "structural calculations" that numerically prove the durability of the structure. At MUJI House, we carry out individual structural calculations for every building we construct.

The concept of a "wooden house"

The open, single-room space with a void allows residents to "edit" their home as they wish. This free-flowing concept is embodied in a wooden building, the first in the "MUJI House" series, the "Wooden House." It employs the SE construction method, using structural laminated timber for stable strength. With large openings and deep eaves, it has a clean, box-like exterior, maximizing sunlight and ventilation. Its rational design minimizes environmental impact. The south-facing eaves adjust for seasonal changes in sunlight, blocking direct sunlight in summer and guiding warm sunlight deep into the interior in winter. External insulation prevents radiant heat from escaping, ensuring comfortable living with minimal energy consumption. *Winner of the Good Design Award in 2006 and the Good Design Long Life Design Award in 2017.

The Concept of the "Window House"

The "Window House" focuses on the role of windows not only for ventilation and lighting, but also as a frame for framing the landscape. By adopting the SE construction method, which is supported by pillars and beams without relying on walls, it is possible to open a window wherever you want it, as if cutting into the wall. Unencumbered by window frames or sashes, you can enjoy the view from the window like a painting. The exterior is a triangular-roofed house, which is the original form of a house. To maintain the house's distinctive silhouette, the roof and wall join neatly without overhanging eaves, creating a refined form.
*Winner of the Good Design Gold Award in 2008.

The Concept of "Hikari no Ie"

Because "Hikari no Ie" is a single-story house, it uses full-opening sash windows that can be retracted into the wall, allowing you to enjoy the connection with the garden. By eliminating the step with the wooden deck and gently connecting the indoors and outdoors, a spacious space is created. On sunny weekends, the house proposes a new way of living by bringing indoor activities out into the garden, such as bringing the table out to the garden and enjoying a leisurely breakfast under the shade of the trees.
*Winner of the 2020 Good Design Award Best 100.
