IDEE Gallery will host an exhibition and sale of ceramic works by ceramic artist Derek Wilson, known for his geometric forms.

Jun 17, 2023
Ryohin Keikaku Co., Ltd., which plans and operates IDEE, will host "Forming Shadows," an exhibition and sales event by Belfast-based ceramic artist Derek Wilson from July 14 to August 15, 2023, at the IDEE Gallery attached to IDEE TOKYO (Gransta Tokyo B1F, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo).

IDEE hosts various special exhibitions as part of its "Life in Art" project, with the aim of making art more accessible to people in their daily lives. Ryohin Keikaku is also implementing IDEE's "Life in Art" project at MUJI stores to promote a life filled with art. Derek Wilson's works are connected to the Life in Art concept that IDEE has proposed to date, and this will be the second time the exhibition has been held, following the first in 2021.

Derek Wilson's ceramic works are characterized by geometric forms inspired by British Constructivism and other movements, matte glazes and gentle colors. The complex, abstract shapes are created by hand using a potter's wheel in his own studio. The conceptual objects, born from skilled craftsmanship and a minimalist aesthetic, stand quietly in space, yet reveal various expressions as the light passes.

A total of 50 works are scheduled to be exhibited at this exhibition, including vases and wall-hanging objects as well as Japan's first freestanding objects.

■Message from the artist regarding the exhibition
The works I created for this exhibition were born from my desire to explore whether it was possible to elevate the concrete object of vessels into an abstract form. "Vessels," which have the function of holding things and are reminiscent of everyday tools, are developed into abstract forms, creating objects that serve as art that enrich everyday life. The surface texture and shadows of my works are universal elements that stimulate my thinking and creativity. In contrast to the permanence and solidity of the ceramic form, the way the light and shadow reflected on the object shift and change depending on where you view it and how you place it expresses transience and impermanence.

‘Shadows provide contrast and give form to the light’
"Light and shade of shadow give shape to light."
