The Mori Art Museum in Roppongi Hills will host the special exhibition "Takashi Murakami: The 500 Arhats," from October 31, 2015, to March 6, 2016. Murakami Takashi is known as one of Japan's leading artists, having advocated the Superflat theory and organized the contemporary art exhibition "GEISAI." This exhibition will showcase his recent activities and is one of the few in Japan to feature Murakami's work. One of his most notable works is "The 500 Arhats," a painting he created in 2012 in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake. This work depicts a monk in training on a canvas measuring 3 meters high and 100 meters wide. The work intertwines finite life with the infinite universe and nature, and is imbued with a prayer that transcends religion. How closely can art approach the realism of our world and humanity? The exhibition will explore Murakami's artistic perspective. This will be the first Murakami exhibition at the Mori Art Museum in 14 years. It promises to be a valuable opportunity to discover another side of Murakami beyond anime pop.
