To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jun Ashida's founding, the exhibition "The Immortality of Elegance: A Look at the Trajectory and Future of Jun Ashida, One Essence of Fashion" will be held at the National Art Center, Tokyo in Roppongi from December 3rd to 8th.
The exhibition will feature approximately 50 sculptural archive and reproduction pieces created using haute couture techniques, as well as selections from the latest 2015 Spring/Summer collection. It will explore designer Jun Ashida's creations spanning more than half a century, alongside the historical backdrop and evolution of high fashion in Japan.
In addition to registered original items such as the "Compass®" circular shawl, released in 2002, and the "Bombu®" tiered pants, inspired by bamboo knots, released in 2009, the exhibition will also showcase collaborations with designer Christian Lacroix and professional dancer TAKAHIRO, who has performed with Madonna and other artists. After studying under illustrator Junichi Nakahara, Jun Ashida debuted as a fashion designer in 1953. In 1960, he became a consulting designer at Takashimaya, and from 1966 he was appointed as the personal designer for Crown Princess Michiko (now Empress Michiko) for ten years. Since then, he has received support from the Imperial Family, ambassadors from various countries, and political and business circles, contributing to international friendship. These achievements led to the spread of ready-to-wear in the Japanese market, which was still dominated by haute couture collections at the time, and Ashida can be considered a pioneer in this field. He presents collections every season, and held a special show to commemorate his 50th anniversary at the 2014 Spring/Summer Tokyo Collection. A video of his latest 2015 Spring/Summer collection is also currently airing on his official website.
