Retrospective of contemporary artist Jiro Takamatsu at MOMAT.

Nov 16, 2014

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo will hold a retrospective of contemporary artist Jiro Takamatsu, "Takamatsu Jiro Mysteries," from December 2nd to March 1st. Takamatsu's work varied significantly in materials and expression over time, making his style and intent difficult to grasp. Therefore, this time, three curators will be responsible for early, middle, and late works, respectively. Citing words left behind in art magazines and other sources, they will provide a clearer picture of Takamatsu and his work. Approximately 50 works, including objects, sculptures, and paintings, will be on display. Approximately 150 drawings will also be on display. These include Takamatsu's signature "Shadow" series, as well as his "Single" and "Compound" series, which use wood and steel. The "Foreign Food" series, which he produced in his later years, when he was devoted to painting, will also be on display. The exhibition design is handled by Torafu Architects. Various features have been prepared, such as a "Shadow Lab" where you can experience the mechanics of the "Shadow" series, and a "Stage" where you can get a panoramic view of Takamatsu's inner world. Also, be sure to check out the original title logo, created by graphic designer Kikuchi Atsuki.

During the exhibition, starting on December 7th, a relay talk by each curator will be held in three sessions. Also, on the 6th, a lecture titled "People Who Know Takamatsu Jiro" will be held, featuring guests such as art critic Takashima Naoyuki. On December 20th, a roundtable discussion titled "Creating an Exhibition" will be held, featuring guests including Suzuno Koichi of Torafu Architects. A mystery event celebrating Takamatsu's birthday is also scheduled for February 20th.
