The appeal of Kagoshima's highly original works lies in their well-structured designs and the shapes they create using unique techniques. This time, a large-scale exhibition themed around these two concepts will be held simultaneously at two venues: Mitsubishi Estate ARTIUM and Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. Next, we head to the "Kagoshima Mutsumi Art Exhibition," currently being held at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, where the scent of plum blossoms fills the air.
■ Experience the "Kagoshima Mutsumi Art Exhibition" at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
The "Art Exhibition" took place in the Treasure Hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, the main shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane. The approximately 6,000 plum trees of 200 varieties within the shrine grounds are in bloom, heralding the arrival of spring. In keeping with the season when delicate plum blossoms bloom, the theme of the art exhibition is the "Kyokusui no Utage" ritual held at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine.
In the dimly lit venue, visitors are first greeted by sculptures modeled after the plum tree, the symbol of the exhibition, followed by plum-related works from Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine's collection. Among the exhibits are six paper dolls by doll maker and poet Kagoshima Juzo. Their unique and avant-garde aesthetics make it easy to see why they were considered heretical at the time. Sensing a shared spirit between Juzo and Kagoshima, I finally made my way to the main venue.

In a completely white space, rows of plum trees as tall as a person, made from laminated cardboard, stand, and a "stream" of white gravel flows through it. The work, created together with curators and volunteers, is an installation that offers a Kagoshima-style interpretation of the "Kyokusui no Utage" ritual, a ritual that has been passed down at Tenmangu Shrine since the Heian period. Visitors are invited to wander freely through the plum grove, reminiscing about a tranquil time filled only with the sounds of Japanese bush warblers. Here, too, we were able to experience Kagoshima's flexible artistic endeavors, which wish for people to "walk freely and enjoy themselves."
In conjunction with this exhibition, there is also a special display of dolls by Kagoshima Juzo, Kagoshima's great-uncle, the founder of paper dolls and a Living National Treasure.

Owned by the Treasure Hall of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine
Large and small, two-dimensional and three-dimensional, traditional and innovative expressions. Just like the blossoming of a plum tree, thoughts swell, blossom, and then bear fruit. At the "Two Kagoshima Mutsumi Exhibitions," you can learn more about, feel, and enjoy the process. The world of Kagoshima gently expands the viewer's imagination and brings a sense of happiness. We hope you will take a tour of his hometown, Fukuoka, and immerse yourself in its splendor.

Photography was permitted at both venues, and you could really get a feel for Kagoshima's "entertaining gaze."

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine is selling the dried confectionery "Ume and Uguisu" (1,300 yen), a collaboration between Kagoshima and Hakata Japanese confectionery shop "Suzukake," as an official souvenir.
