Ceramic artist and artist Mutsumi Kagoshima will be holding two exhibitions, "#MutsumiKagoshimaExhibition," in Fukuoka from January 28th to March 12th, 2017.
This time, the work of this artist, Kagoshima, who demonstrates rare talent in a variety of fields, will be divided into "design works" and "sculptural works," and the two exhibitions will be held simultaneously. The exhibition at Mitsubishi Estate ARTIUM in Tenjin will focus on designs, while the exhibition at Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine will focus on sculpture.
Mitsubishi Estate ARTIUM will be holding "Mutsumi Kagoshima Design Exhibition." The exhibition was first held at the doinel shop in Aoyama, Tokyo, in 2013 by Kagoshima, who creates vessels and objects decorated with designs based on his unique worldview using plant and animal motifs, captivating people with his overwhelming compositional ability. Previously, Kagoshima Mutsumi's work has been presented through a variety of methods, including extracting designs, reconstructing designs, and creating new designs, under the belief that "the appeal of Kagoshima Mutsumi's world lies in the designs."
This will be his first large-scale exhibition in Fukuoka, and in addition to archive works previously featured in design exhibitions, a wall full of handmade vessels, each with a unique design, will also be on display. Other exhibits will include products focusing on two-dimensional works, works in collaboration with various brands, and a mural space. This exhibition allows visitors to experience Kagoshima Mutsumi's worldview through his expression using a variety of materials.
Meanwhile, at the Dazaifu Tenmangu Treasure House, the "Kagoshima Mutsumi Sculpture Exhibition" will feature primarily ceramic works from Kagoshima, while the open exhibition space will create a "Banquet of Curved Waters" with interpretations unique to Kagoshima. This "Kyokusui no Utage" is a Shinto ritual that carries on the Heian period court entertainment of the Imperial Court, in which participants sit along the curved stream in the Document Museum Plum Garden next to the Treasure Hall, compose waka poetry, and drink sake as cups flowing from upstream pass in front of them. This time, along with the "Kyokusui no Utage" expressed in Kagoshima style, you can enjoy the scent of 6,000 plum trees in the temple grounds.
