Stylist Yui Mochizuki's "Daikanyama souvenir shop" "HAICARA" opens

Aug 11, 2013

In June, stylist Yui Mochizuki opened a select shop called "HAICARA" (Green Mansion 102, 1-31-14 Ebisu Nishi, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo) with her friend Nobutaka Ohara. The concept is "a souvenir shop in Daikanyama." Aiming to offer "things they find truly interesting" that aren't found in fast fashion or department stores, the shop stocks items created by Mochizuki's friends—designers, stylists, and creators—as well as vintage goods. Mochizuki is in charge of selecting the clothing and shoes, while Ohara is in charge of selecting the goods. The two have been friends for 20 years and began searching for a space a year ago. The shop carries the full line of Mochizuki's brand, "HOWL and another poem." This fall/winter season, the theme is "NEW CLASSIC," proposing a new American casual style. The store has collaborated with various brands to create items such as an M65 jacket in collaboration with Yoshio Kubo, a set with TAISHI NOBUKUNI, a T-shirt with art director Atsushi Umezawa, a scarf with Suzuki Takayuki, and a women's shirt with Robes & Confections.

The store primarily carries men's clothing and shoes. The selection includes items from H? katsukawa from Tokyo, a brand by Eiichi Katsukawa, who trained at Paul Harnden; shoes from mythography by Hidetaka Miyagi, which includes a shoe keeper set; and vintage T-shirts with hand stencils from BLANKS. The store also features unisex items, including Moroccan linen rugs and vintage eyewear purchased from European flea markets, original candles from Candle Jun, friendship bracelets from Fumisanga, made with parts collected by model Fumi on her travels around the world, and stuffed animals from plush toy maker Daigurumi. The entrance is decorated with posters by Richard Avedon and paintings by Egon Schiele from Mochizuki's personal collection. The interior is themed around a "souvenir of the circuit." Antique flags from the 1950s span the ceiling. The fitting rooms are handmade red and white tents modeled after circus tents. The hanger racks are by Kousei Werkstatt, an antique furniture store in Meguro.
