Stylist Tomoki Sukezane, who works for numerous magazines and advertisements, will be publishing his first book on fashion based on his own styling photographs, "Tomoki Sukezane's Secret Pleasures" (Magazine House), on the 27th.
Sukezane, who enjoys collecting clothes as a hobby and is an admitted fashion lover, writes in this autobiographical book about his current fashion, as well as the boots he wanted to wear when he was three years old, events in Kyoto where he was born and raised, an episode from his early days in Tokyo, his first visit to Paris in the scorching heat, talented designers, his mentors and best friends, movies, books, magazines, stores and other encounters with the people and things that have influenced him. Regarding what prompted him to publish this book, Sukezane said, "I uploaded a full-body photo of myself almost every day to a section on my website (sukezane.net) called '365 STYLES,' along with a description of what I was wearing and the brands I was wearing. An editor at Magazine House saw it and asked me if I wanted to turn it into a book. However, I thought it would be boring to just turn the section into a book, so I wrote 100 new essays to accompany it." Sukezane says that as he uploaded full-body photos of himself every day to '365 STYLES,' he began to see aspects of himself that he hadn't noticed before. "It's quite difficult to see yourself objectively, but I think keeping a full-body photo of yourself as a diary is a good first step. An outfit that you thought was 'great!' at the time can sometimes look really embarrassing when you look at it again later. It's fine to copy the fashion of stylish people, but fashion ideas actually come from within you."
To commemorate the publication of the book, a talk show and autograph session will be held at Daikanyama T-Site on July 15th. In addition to Sukemasa, the talk show will feature Yoshimura Ryo, the designer who was in charge of the book's cover, and Hoshino Toru, a former Popeye and current editor of Brutus who frequently appears in the book. Numbered tickets will be distributed to the first 70 people who purchase and reserve the book in-store at T-Site, by phone, or through the online store.
