[2013-2014 Autumn/Winter Tokyo Collection] Yoshio Kubo takes a more realistic approach with ironic designs

Mar 25, 2013

On March 22nd, Yoshio Kubo held their 2013-14 Autumn/Winter collection show at Bellesalle Shibuya Garden. Designer Yoshio Kubo described the iconic graphics, which Kubo had previously avoided, as "intentionally sarcastic." Tigers and lions appeared in jacquard and print, and ironic words like "GENERIC CLOTHING" were used in the alphabet graphics. The colorful knife and hammer graphics were inspired by the lifestyles of elderly people living in mountain huts. Items fused street and fashion elements, such as pairing peacoats and trench coats with nylon flight jacket sleeves, or matching camouflage-printed white shirts with matching ties. Stylist Yui Mochizuki's styling also combined sporty graphic-print blousons and down jackets with tailored pieces to propose a new style of suiting.

Kubo said, "For the past 10 years or so since the brand was founded, we have asserted our originality as a brand, and this has been well-received overseas. Starting this season, I wanted to take a more realistic approach to the domestic market, so I designed for a higher target age group."

The models' hair and makeup featured shiny platinum hair that exuded masculinity, style, and an ice cream vibe. The venue also featured a set reminiscent of a railway bridge on a runway with a transparent floor, and the music, composed by Koichi Matsunaga of compuma, attempted an approach that used ambient sounds to draw the audience in.
