Isetan Mitsukoshi proposes a new business model for regional department stores with the remodeling of the Isetan Matsudo store

Jun 7, 2013
On the 5th, Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings announced the outline of its three-year plan for building a "new regional department store business model."

This is a new initiative to develop competitive and profitable stores at Isetan Mitsukoshi branches and group regional stores in the Tokyo metropolitan area that meet the ever-changing needs of local customers. The company's basic approach is to "strengthen areas tailored to local needs," "develop hybrid store models," and "strengthen store distinctiveness."

The first step in putting this business model into practice is the remodeling of the Isetan Matsudo store, which will celebrate its 40th anniversary next year. The specific store concept, "Realizing a 'my store where everyone can gather,' close to the community and catering to the needs of three generations (parents and children)," was revealed ahead of the store's opening this fall. While the current store primarily targets the baby boomer generation, the remodeled store will target the growing baby boomer junior generation of families in the area. The specific approach being adopted in the remodeling is the creation of a "hybrid" store. A common concept will be established between the sections operated by Isetan and those operated by specialty stores, resulting in efficient floor layout and improved customer mobility. Areas where department store demand is strong, such as gift demand, will be addressed by strengthening independent sales through unit shops. Additionally, product lineups in areas where Isetan has previously lacked will be expanded by introducing leading specialty stores. As an example of the creation of a "hybrid" store, new bookstores (Junkudo), stationery (Maruzen Stationery), and outdoor goods (Koujitsu Sanso) are planned. By offering a wide lineup covering all aspects of life, including "clothing, food, housing, leisure, beauty, and learning," the company aims to increase customer involvement in their daily lives. Meanwhile, Bornelund Asobi no Sekai, opening for the first time in a department store, is attracting attention as a way to "strengthen areas tailored to local needs." This is a complex facility that combines the Bornelund Shop, a store selling toys from around the world, with KID-O-KID, an indoor play area for parents and children. As the new target audience for Isetan Matsudo is the baby boomer junior generation of families, a safe and secure children's play area will be included within the store.

Details of the specific floor plan are currently being considered. Starting with the remodeling of Isetan Matsudo, Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings will aim to increase the value of its stores in each of its commercial areas.
