On the 4th, Fast Retailing announced its preliminary sales figures for May (fiscal year ending August 2013). Existing store sales increased 10.9% year-on-year. Total directly managed store sales increased 14.2%, and sales from directly managed stores and direct sales also increased 14.3%. While April's same-store sales were down 3.0%, this was the first year-on-year increase in two months. Customer numbers also increased significantly: 17% at existing stores, 20.4% at directly managed stores, and 20.3% at directly managed stores and direct sales. However, average customer spending decreased in each category: 5.2% at existing stores, 5.1% at directly managed stores, and 5.0% at directly managed stores and direct sales. This marks the sixth consecutive month of declines since December. The significant increases in sales and customer count were due to robust sales of summer clothing. As temperatures began to rise from mid-month onwards, sales of campaign products increased.
