Must-visit Italian Gelato Shops in Milan (Duomo Area Edition) [From Cities: Admiring the Cities of the World Vol. 12]

Jul 29, 2021

In our series [From cities: Admiring the cities of the world], we bring you the latest local information on cities around the world, such as Paris, Milan, New York, etc., notable addresses, and real city snaps! For a while, we'll be sending you articles with the hope that in the near future, when we can travel abroad freely again, we'll be able to visit those places.

In this 12th installment, we'll focus on recommended "exquisite Italian gelato shops" in Milan, Italy.

By the way, "gelato" means "frozen" in Italian.
It has less milk fat than ice cream, so it's also lower in calories!

However, Milan is made up of many different districts, and there are currently around 800 gelaterias in Milan, with recommended shops scattered throughout each district. Therefore, this project will be divided into three articles, each featuring a different area.

This time, we'll be introducing the Duomo District, home to the Duomo (Milan Cathedral), one of Milan's must-see tourist attractions.

01. "Ciacco"
Menus are available for those with dairy and wheat allergies.

Flavors: Matcha, Cheesecake (Cup or Cone / Small 2.50€, Medium 3.00€, Large 3.50€)

Ciacco is a gelateria that has won numerous awards since opening in 2014. This year, in 2021, it once again won three cones in the "Gambero Rosso Gelato" category.

Owner Stefano is constantly researching gelato not only as a dessert, but also as a "food." For example, he proposes new ways to enjoy gelato, such as "gelato carbonara" and "gelato with meat sauce," which use gelato as a sauce.

The originality and high quality of the drinks have earned Chacco a reputation for its ever-growing fan base. Another notable feature is the wide range of menu items available that can be enjoyed by people with dairy or wheat allergies.

Flavor: Strawberry, Lemon & Basil (Cup or Cone / Small 2.50€, Medium 3.00€, Large 3.50€)

First, we ordered the highly recommended matcha and cheesecake flavors in a cup. Honestly, the combination of matcha and cheesecake is amazing! The shop is particular about using Japanese "Uji matcha" for the matcha, so you can enjoy the deep, rich flavor of the matcha. It's not too sweet. The flavors instantly remind me of Japan, and are a must-try for matcha lovers! The cheesecake-flavored gelato is filled with dried fruits like pistachios and raspberries, creating an exquisite harmony. My other order was a cone of bis (in Italy, a refill is called a "bis"). This time, I chose fruit flavors. I selected strawberry and lemon (with basil). The sweetness of the strawberry and the sweet and sour lemon create a perfect harmony! It's a refreshing taste, perfect for summer. The lemon flavor has basil leaves in it, which adds a fresh touch, further enhancing the freshness of the flavor.

02. "Amorino"
Pay attention to the romantic presentation, reminiscent of rose petals

Flavors: pistachio, strawberry, vanilla (small cone 3.70€, medium 4.50€)

"Amorino" is an organic gelateria. It is owned by Cristiano and Paolo, best friends since childhood. The two Italians founded the shop in Paris in 2002 and made a triumphant return to Italy in 2010.

All of the sorbets, made from fruit juice, are gluten and lactose-free. The highlight here is undoubtedly the corn gelato, which is presented like "rose petals." We also recommend ordering mini macaroons as a topping!

Flavors: (from left in the photo) Coconut, mango / black cherry, berry (corn small size 3.70€, medium size 4.50€ / macaroon topping 1.80€ each)

We were so impressed by the rose-shaped gelato that it was almost a shame to eat it! First, we chose the Italian tricolore: pistachio, strawberry, and vanilla flavors. The petal-shaped gelato is scooped from the center outwards, allowing you to enjoy a combination of three different flavors. The exquisitely mixed flavors are delicious and enchanting. Wanting to try other flavors, I returned to the store later. This time, I ordered a coconut and mango combination, and a vanilla dark cherry and berry combination. I also added a cranberry macaron to the berry combination. Personally, I especially recommend the coconut and mango combination! If you're looking for something a little more unique, I recommend checking out the yuzu and spirits flavors.

03. "Artico"
Gelato made with carefully selected ingredients, including locally sourced produce and exclusive chocolate.

Artico is a high-quality gelateria with four stores in Milan. Their gelato is made using only the finest ingredients; for example, they source pistachios from Sicily and chocolate from Amadei in Tuscany. Artico's gelato, which places such importance on ingredients, tastes exceptionally delicious. The store's recommended flavors are lemon, lime, basil, pistachio, and chocolate.
The store also hosts a year-round gelateria school, which is attended by people with the goal of opening their own gelateria.

It was a hot day, so I thought a refreshing flavor would be nice, and ordered the lemon, lime, and basil. It had a refreshing taste, but was also rich. The lemon and lime are not too sour, so even those who don't like the sourness of citrus fruits should try this flavor. A gelateria is the "maestro" of gelato. It's no wonder that people who aspire to become gelaterias gather at this school.
