"Anne of Green Gables" exhibition held at Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi. Handicrafts, manuscripts, etc. on display.

May 16, 2014

The "Anne of Green Gables by Montgomery and Hanako - A Fateful Book that Connected Canada and Japan" exhibition will be held at the gallery on the 7th floor of the main building of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store from May 21st to June 2nd. This event traces the paths of two women connected to "Anne of Green Gables," a novel set in Prince Edward Island, Canada, that depicts the growth of young Anne. The exhibition was organized to commemorate the 85th anniversary of Japan-Canada diplomatic relations.

The exhibition traces the paths of two women - Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of the original "Anne of Green Gables," and Hanako Muraoka, the translator who continued to translate the novel and introduce it to Japan despite wartime - and introduces the culture and lifestyles of women at the time. The exhibition will feature excerpts from the original manuscript of "Anne of Green Gables," which took approximately eight months to complete starting in 1905; the original and original manuscripts translated by Hanako Muraoka; and the first edition published by Mikasa Shobo in 1952. Also on display in Japan for the first time will be Montgomery's "Green Scrapbook" (1898), whose short stories and poems were later used as inspiration for "Anne of Green Gables." Also on display will be Montgomery's handmade crafts, including doilies (small tablecloths) and knitted lace. In addition to the exhibits, original goods such as original dolls, pin brooches, coasters, placemats, ballpoint pens, and mini towels will be available for purchase. A Canadian Products Fair will also be held in conjunction with the exhibition, showcasing the flavors of Anne's native Canada, including maple syrup, cookies, and caramel.
