[Box in handmade washi paper from Saga Prefecture]
Founded in 1699 (Genroku 12), Nao Washi in Saga boasts a history of over 300 years. Until the early Showa period, there were over 100 paper workshops in the area, but over time, the number has decreased, and today, only one remains: Hizen Nao Washi Workshop. Nao Washi, as in the past, is made from a type of paper called Kaji, a member of the mulberry family, characterized by its thick, strong fibers. Il Cioccolato also uses washi paper for its boxes, made from a mixture of hydrangeas that did not meet the standards and could not be shipped, maple leaves and rape blossoms collected around the workshop, and safflower used for dyeing in the workshop.
