Paddlers Coffee: A taste of Kinfolk's hometown, Portland [Press Recommendation]

Jul 19, 2013

This series introduces food items selected by trend-conscious and discerning members of the press. This time, we're featuring coffee beans from Puddler's Coffee.

The American lifestyle magazine Kinfolk recently released its Japanese edition. At the launch party, coffee beans from Stumptown Coffee Rotors, a coffee roaster in Portland, USA, where Kinfolk was born, were prepared as a gift for guests.

Portland, along with Seattle, is known as a coffee town. One of the coffee shops in particular has been beloved by locals. Since its founding in 1999, Stumptown Coffee has not only carefully selected high-quality beans, but also clearly displays the bean variety, origin, and flavor characteristics of the beans when selling them. It is said to have pioneered a coffee style that celebrates the differences between beans and helped create modern coffee culture. Now with branches in Seattle and Manhattan, Stumptown Coffee is considered the "best coffee" by many coffee connoisseurs. The only place in Japan where you can purchase coffee beans from this renowned shop is Puddler's Coffee, a coffee stand in Sangubashi, Tokyo. They always stock several varieties of beans shipped directly from Portland, and are committed to selling only fresh beans roasted within 10 days. The store is located on the first floor of Rainbow Building 3, 4-5-13 Yoyogi, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, adjacent to Italian restaurant LIFE SON and Tarui Bakery, a shop selling homemade yeast bread and pastries. Kota Engaku, editor-in-chief of Kinfolk Japan, said, "We chose this coffee for the party gifts because we wanted to introduce the flavor of Portland and to show our respect for Daisuke Matsushima of Puddler's Coffee, who single-handedly brought Portland coffee to Japan."
