"THE SURF SHOP," an experimental project in which creators who love surfing and the ocean create a surf shop, is currently running at the Nakanoshima Design Museum de sign de in Osaka. The project runs until July 26th. The shop was conceived by surfboard maker Yoshihiko Kushimoto, producer Satoru Uehira, and artist Koji Toyoda, who creates surfing-inspired works. While it has been held in Tokyo and San Francisco since 2009, this is its first time in Osaka. The logo design was created by graphic designer Taku Satoh, who also worked on the packaging for Meiji Oishii Gyunyu and the interior design of Issey Miyake's concept shop, ELTTOB TEP ISSEY MIYAKE. The exhibitors' occupations and titles are diverse, including photographers, artists, graphic designers, furniture designers, board shapers, wetsuit manufacturers, and directors active in the apparel and advertising industries. The only thing they have in common is that they're all surfers.
The exhibition, located in a naturally lit space on the riverside of Nakanoshima, Osaka, features not only photographs and paintings but also boards, clothing, videos and objects. The works all convey the creators' love for the ocean and surfing, and most of the exhibits are available for purchase (although some are not for sale). Thanks to its great waterside location, it's a perfect summer exhibition where you can feel the ocean even in the city.
