Hotel rooms transformed into galleries: Contemporary art fair held in Osaka

Jun 3, 2013

The 11th contemporary art fair, "ART OSAKA 2013," will be held at Hotel Granvia Osaka for two days from July 20th to 21st.

The fair is the longest-running contemporary art exhibition in Japan. The 26th floor of the hotel, directly connected to JR Osaka Station, will be rented out, with guest rooms used as exhibition space. This year, a total of 52 galleries will be exhibiting, mainly from the Kansai region but also from all over Japan and Asia. Ten galleries from South Korea will be participating, the highest number ever, and a gallery from Kuala Lumpur has also been confirmed to participate for the first time. In addition to the exhibits in the guest rooms, the museum will also feature an exhibition introducing four Kansai-born artists, including Takesada Matsutani, who inherit the spirit of the avant-garde art group "Gutai," which has been reevaluated in recent years, including an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York; a joint exhibition by 15 galleries from Japan and Korea; an exhibition of works by the "Kyoto City University of Arts Artworks Project," an industry-academia collaboration launched in 2009 with Kyoto City University of Arts; and an exhibition of works by "Jeune Creation in ART OSAKA 2013 (tentative title)," a mutual exchange program for young contemporary artists between Japan and France. A related event, "SNIFF OUT 2013," a project combining art and music, will be held at INTEX Osaka Building No. 5 (1-5-102 Nankokita, Suminoe-ku, Osaka) during the same period.
