Painter Gustav Klimt was born on July 14, 1862, in Vienna, Austria. The son of a sculptor, he enrolled in the School of Arts and Crafts with his brother after graduating from elementary school. After graduating, he founded a workshop for theater decoration with painter Franz Matsch and his brother, and was given more and more work. In 1894, the Australian government commissioned Klimt to paint the ceiling of the University of Vienna. This work, a triptych entitled "Philosophy," "Medicine," and "Jurisprudence," was severely criticized for violating the client's intended theme. Klimt continued working on the project until 1905, but the criticism was so severe that he abandoned the contract midway. Amid this upheaval, the Vienna Secession, a group seeking new forms of expression in opposition to conservative art trends, was founded by Klimt and architect Otto Wagner. Klimt became one of the leading figures in the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) movement, which was at its peak in Europe at the time. Klimt exhibited his masterpiece, "Beethoven Frieze," at the "Beethoven Exhibition" organized by the Secession Movement in 1902. This work also drew criticism and was lost for many years, but in 1970 it was purchased by the Austrian government and is now on display at the Secession Hall in Vienna. Klimt's paintings feature many women, and the lavish costumes they wear were cutting-edge Vienna fashion at the time. Emily Flöge co-designed the outfits, and Klimt's photographs of them are said to be the world's first fashion photographs. Klimt was also known for his love of women, and although he never married, he is said to have had affairs with many of the women who posed for him nudes. In his later years, he painted fewer flashy, decorative works and more landscapes. He died in 1918 from a stroke and pneumonia. In 2006, a film about his life, "Klimt," was released, starring John Malkovich. In addition, in September 2012, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Klimt's birth, the Vienna studio he loved in his later years was opened to the public, generating a lot of buzz.
