Toray Industries, Inc. launched "Silk" in 1963, a silky polyester material. Developed through the development of a yarn that mimics the structure of natural silk, the fiber has continued to evolve every year, expanding its lineup of materials. In recent years, it has been sold not only for kimonos and other traditional Japanese clothing, but also for Western-style fashion.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the launch of "Silk," Toray will be rolling out various commemorative projects throughout the year. The project theme is "Toward the Next Brilliance," and a symbolic mark commemorating the 50th anniversary has also been created.
The commemorative projects are currently being held as part of the ongoing "GINZA FASHON WEEK." On Saturday, March 23, a Western-style floor fashion show will be held at Ginza Mitsukoshi and Matsuya Ginza. Additionally, a collaboration project featuring fashion school students using "Silk" products is scheduled for March 20 (Wed) through 26 (Tue) at Ginza Mitsukoshi, and March 23 (Sat) at Matsuya Ginza. Other upcoming events include special sales of "Toray 'Silk' Kimono" at major department stores (spring and summer in Tokyo, Osaka, and other locations), and a new product launch event for industry insiders (July in Tokyo).
Another hot topic is the launch of "Silk Soubi," a new woven material for Japanese clothing, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the product's release. This new material focuses on comfort when wearing kimonos, and by applying special thread processing technology to the raw yarn, it has been woven with a supple and soft texture. Improved fabric design has also made it 10 to 15% lighter than previous products. The fibers have antistatic properties, which also reduce the generation of annoying static electricity. The "Silk" series' key features of ease of handling, being "washable and wrinkle-resistant," remain the same as previous products.
When selling "Silk Sobi," Toray plans to offer a variety of products, focusing on thin, breathable pongee fabric for summer use and thick jacquard fabric for year-round use. Full-scale sales will begin in April, with sales expected to reach 5,000 units in the first year and 30,000 units three years later.
