Home to art spots like the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo and galleries, as well as unique secondhand bookstores, Kiyosumi Shirakawa has seen a surge in the number of third-wave coffee shops, including Blue Bottle Coffee, Arise Coffee Roasters, and Allpress Espresso, specializing in roasting and brewing techniques. Kiyosumi Shirakawa is a city that ushers in new culture, while also boasting a fusion of traditional sweet shops, tsukudani (simmered food) restaurants, and oden (stew) shops, all deeply rooted in everyday life. Attracted by the fascinating blend of new and old, and the ambivalent atmosphere of the town, Yuya Mita, owner of the tea specialty shop TEAPOND, opened his shop in Kiyosumi Shirakawa. Now in its second year, the shop attracts customers from both the neighborhood and far and wide, craving stylish teapots, cups, and saucers, as well as a wide selection of high-quality teas.

■A wide variety of teas, including teas from different farms, our own blends, and fruit teas
"We always have around 60 types of tea in stock, including teas from different regions and farms, flavored teas blended in-house, and fruit and herb teas blended in Germany and Austria. Recently, just like with coffee beans, more and more customers are particular about the picking time and the name of the farm," says Mita. Even from the same farm, the taste of tea can vary greatly depending on the picking time. Apparently tea picked in the spring has a youthful freshness, while tea picked in the summer has depth and sweetness. That's why TEAPOND offers several varieties of tea leaves picked at different times from the same farm.

The store is lined with rows of individually wrapped tea leaf packets. It feels like a pharmacy.

As spring approaches, we were introduced to some of TEAPOND's recommended teas. First up is the shop's popular flavored tea series, which Mita blends himself. Two varieties in particular are said to be popular: "Earl Grey Bluebird" and "Lemon Ginger." "Earl Grey Bluebird," with its light flavor, blended with the aroma of oriental fruits and cornflower, is popular among tea connoisseurs. "Lemon Ginger" is popular among men for its refreshing citrus flavor, which will warm you up during the slightly colder months. The herbal tea "Nirai Kanai" boasts the gorgeous aroma and vibrant colors of tropical fruits. It's caffeine-free, so it's perfect to drink before bed.

By origin and farm, there are "2015 summer harvest, Sitaka Farm BOP1, Ruhuna District, Ceylon" and "2015 spring harvest, Mist Valley Farm EX-2, Ilam District, Nepal". Shitaka Farm's black tea, with its smoky aroma and mild, rich flavor, is recommended not only for drinking straight but also as a milk tea. The Ilam region of Nepal borders the Darjeeling region of India, so Mist Valley Farm's black tea is said to taste like the finest Darjeeling. With its youthful green notes and refreshing sweetness, it's also perfect for cold-brewed iced tea.

■ Black tea made in Japan is also popular! We want you to enjoy your favorite cup of tea at any given time.
A recent trend at TEAPOND is that they are also focusing on black tea produced in Japan. "We purchase black tea from farmers in Yakushima and Shizuoka. However, because the production volume is low, it sells out quickly once it arrives," says Mita. Finally, on how to enjoy tea, he said, "We carry a huge variety of teas in our shop. Many of them are teas that you can only encounter at certain times, so please feel free to ask our staff about them. We hope you will enjoy not only the usual standard tea, but also a variety of cups to suit your mood, whether it be morning, noon or evening."
