Each bookstore will act as a concierge, recommending "the book you should read now" to FASHION HEADLINE readers. Every Thursday, each branch of art bookshop NADiff will introduce a book they recommend. This time, we will be introducing the book recommended by NADiff Contemporary, a branch in Kiyosumi Shirakawa, Tokyo (4-1-1 Miyoshi, Koto-ku, Tokyo, inside the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo).
■ "TOKYO - Revealing the Invisible City"
What do Japanese people, and people all over the world, imagine when they hear the word "TOKYO"?
This book is the official catalogue for the exhibition "TOKYO - Revealing the Invisible City" currently being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (running until February 14th). This exhibition is divided into two parts: "Tokyo," individually curated by six artists, including YMO, Miyazawa Akio, Ninagawa Mika, and Homma Takashi; and new works on the theme of "Tokyo" by four groups of artists from Japan and abroad, including the contemporary art activity team Me.
What was happening in Tokyo's cultural scene during the bubble period of the 1980s, when the world was beginning to recognize it as a unique cultural city? Miyazawa Akio discusses the non-physical and superficial aspects of YMO, which established the music genre known as techno-pop. Ninagawa Mika, who firsthand witnessed the Takenoko-zoku and Maharaja, also offers a fascinating insight. Curated by Takashi Homma, who focuses on the narratives attached to everyday life since the 1990s, the book features his own works "Children of Tokyo" and "TOKYO SUBURBIA," as well as works by Chim↑Pom, who have captured street rats and used them as icons, and works by two brands, mame and FINAL HOME, on the theme of "survival." It also introduces a fictional Tokyo city incorporating a wide variety of image elements created by artists from the digital native to post-internet generation. This book, which is described as a "conceptual map for rediscovering and reconsidering Tokyo," will provide clues for imagining Tokyo's future.
