Pas de Calais, a Japanese brand gaining recognition among Parisian women with a penchant for natural styles, opened a two-week limited-time store at the select shop Merci during Paris Fashion Week. Designer Yukari Suda, a huge Merci fan, sought to hold a special event in Paris this year, marking the brand's 15th anniversary. Merci has been carrying Pas de Calais since the Spring/Summer 2013 collection, and the two brands are self-proclaimed fans of each other. The pop-up store project came about naturally. This time, the store featured a selection of indigo navy and white items from the Spring/Summer 2014 collection, along with bags and stoles in specially commissioned colors exclusive to Merci. The installation at the venue, created by artistic director Mote Sinabel Aoki, evokes the image of tree roots growing from the ceiling. The screen projecting the imagery, also created by Mort Sinabel Aoki, is made of gauze attached to a wooden frame, embroidered, and then painted. This piece is by Swiss jewelry designer Nora. Like the clothing, the collection uses natural colors, creating an overall organic, pastoral atmosphere.
On the opening day, a tourist official from the Pas-de-Calais region, from which the brand is named, showed up, seemingly having heard of the brand. Suda, a fan of the lace made in the region, expressed interest in future collaborations with the region.
Pas-de-Calais participates in the "Tranoi" exhibition every season, and its stockists are expanding across Europe, particularly in France. In addition to the three in Paris, five other regional retailers have decided to stock the brand this season. Some shops, having learned about Pas-de-Calais at the Merci pop-up store, came to purchase its products, suggesting that the event was a welcome success.
