Feb 18, 2014

Fashion journalist Tomoaki Shimizu, who has contributed to various magazines such as "Soen" and "Fashion Tsushin," has just published his second book, "A Stroll Through Paris' Vintage Fashion: A Fashionista's Guide to Paris" (Cosmic Publishing, ¥1,890). The book is packed with vintage-themed content, including a guide to 34 vintage shops in Paris, street snapshots of 18 people who enjoy vintage fashion, visits to the homes of three Parisian vintage enthusiasts, four vintage remakes, and five museums where you can view vintage items. This book is sure to capture the multifaceted culture of France, both for vintage enthusiasts and those new to vintage fashion. According to the author, the cover photo was a meticulous piece that took about six retakes to complete, featuring brooches from the 1930s to 1960s, scarves and silk shirts from a certain major fashion house, bags from the early 20th century, bags from the 1920s, and a uranium glass necklace. Also featured are brooches made by CHANEL's Atelier Gripoix and a bird brooch by CARVEN. The large flower in the center of the cover is said to be part of a shawl influenced by Chinoiserie (Chinese style).

Shimizu Tomoaki was born in Kuwait in 1970. After graduating from university, he moved to France and studied fashion at Studio Berçot. After working at LANVIN and KENZO, he became a journalist. He also introduces many vintage items on his blog, "Tomo-kun's Paris Flea Market Stroll," and holds "flea market exhibitions" several times a year in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyushu. His books include "Paris Flea Market Stroll: A Special Guide & Remake/Repair Techniques" (Cosmic Publishing).
