Takashimaya announced its July in-store sales preliminary figures on the 1st. Sales at Takashimaya's 14 stores were down 4.0% year-on-year. Sales at Takashimaya itself and its 18 domestic department store subsidiaries, including Okayama Takashimaya, Gifu Takashimaya, and Yonago Takashimaya in the Kansai region and four Takasaki Takashimaya stores in the Kanto region, were down 3.9% year-on-year.
By store, the Yonago store posted a positive result thanks to strong orders for seasonal products, but all other stores saw declines compared to the previous year. By region, nine stores in the Kansai region saw a 4.8% decrease year-on-year. This was due to poor performance at the Senboku store (down 9.3%) and Gifu Takashimaya (down 7.2%). Meanwhile, nine stores in the Kanto region saw a 3.4% decrease. Sales stagnated at all stores, particularly at large stores such as the Nihonbashi store (down 3.0%) and Shinjuku store (down 3.6%).
The reason for the slump was the start of the clearance sale, which was brought forward from July 1st last year to June 28th. As a result of some of the demand from July being shifted to June, sales of the main sales items of men's clothing, men's accessories, women's clothing, and women's accessories fell below the previous year's level. Also, as there was one less Sunday than last year, many items, including food, did not reach the previous year's figures. On the other hand, high-priced items performed well. Selected clothing and accessories, including premium brands, jewelry, and art all increased compared to the previous year, maintaining strong sales.
