ISSEY MIYAKE PARFUMS, the pioneer of summer fragrances, has welcomed different guest artists every year since 1995 to develop new summer fragrances. The Summer 2020 "Shades of Kolam" features two fragrances born from a special trip to India.
For the first time, perfumer Marie Salamagne and Paris-based designer duo Fanny Le Bras and Clémentine Berry of Twice Studio teamed up. They visited Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, South India, and were inspired by the enchanting art of kolam, passed down from mother to daughter for generations, as well as the colors and scents they encountered at the spice market. They reinterpreted the two iconic scents, L'Eau d'Issey and L'Eau d'Issey Pour Homme, to create a new summer fragrance.
Born from a journey celebrating the masterful skills of artists, Shades of Kolam will be released nationwide on May 27, 2020.

What is Corum?
Kolam is a unique street art form indigenous to South India. Every morning, women pray in front of their homes and paint their own unique designs. It is a tradition passed down from mother to daughter for centuries and generations. By dripping rice flour and pigments through the gaps between their fingers, they create stunning auspicious patterns that resemble mandalas.
The patterns drawn vary depending on the family lineage, and there are many different types of kolam. Within these, women are able to fully express their creativity. The art of kolam, with its eye-catching graphic designs painted in vivid colors, shares a similarity with the diversity of Issey Miyake's creations.
 
 
 
For us, the challenge was clear: to combine the world of Issey Miyake with the rich expressive form of kolam.

Marie Salamagne
A perfumer born in Paris. After earning a degree in chemistry at university, she graduated from the perfumery school ISIPCA in Versailles. After training at the fragrance company CHARABOT in Grasse, France, he joined Firmenich in 2001. "A good scent has the same effect as Proust's Madeleine. It has the power to take you to another place. The emotions that a scent evokes are so powerful that they are uncontrollable; they are a complete world in themselves," he says, continuing his pursuit of the magic of fragrance.

Top notes are floral notes of grapefruit and freesia, with a subtle hint of cardamom.
They shine in unison with the sheen of a sari and the candlelight illuminating a temple at night. At the heart of the heart is Indian jasmine sambac, which envelops the senses. Jasmine, entwined with softly scented rose petals, evokes the flowing movement of a kolam. The secret to its almost divine brightness is Rosa centifolia. Created without distillation, this fragrance evokes the movement of flower petals, using only the lightest, most volatile notes. The base notes are even more powerful. Cedar adds a mineral, cutting-edge touch to the powdery yet smooth basmati rice (a rice with excellent aromatic properties), creating a sophisticated urban fragrance.
