ISSEY MIYAKE will hold a special exhibition, "On Kamiko - On Paper Clothes," in Ginza, Tokyo and Semba, Osaka from January 6th.

Washi paper - a material that has long been an integral part of Japanese life and has brought new expression to ISSEY MIYAKE's clothing creations. Born from a deep inspiration for washi paper and paper materials, the ISSEY MIYAKE 2025 Spring/Summer Collection is themed "The Beauty of Paper." Shining a light on the visual and tactile texture of paper and the emotional impact that texture evokes, the collection features clothing that embodies both paper's universal familiarity and its poetic, primal allure.

The collection began with the creation of "kamiko" (paper garments) made from washi paper. Made from hemp paper (mashi), made from hemp fibers, these garments were born from respect for the more than 1,000-year-old history of washi paper and its traditional manufacturing methods. At the same time, it is an attempt to breathe new life into washi culture in modern life and connect it to the future.

This exhibition will screen a video following the production process of the paper garments featured in the collection. It will show footage of a hemp farmer who grows rare domestic hemp from seed, and a washi paper workshop with 1,300 years of history, while also conveying the appeal of washi paper and the voices of the workshop staff about the finished paper garments. The video also features designer Satoshi Kondo reflecting on the background that led him to explore washi paper and paper materials, as well as his thoughts on the collection. Additionally, the exhibition will feature visuals for the Spring/Summer 2025 season, shot at the LOG lodging facility in Onomichi, Hiroshima, which served as the inspiration for the collection.

Modern paper garments, created through the harvesting and processing of domestically produced hemp, are made from handmade washi paper that is folded and kneaded repeatedly.
