[LOOK] Burberry presents its Spring/Summer 2023 collection, the final collection by Riccardo Tisci.

Sep 29, 2022

Burberry unveiled its Spring/Summer 2023 collection on September 26th. It was a joint men's and women's collection inspired by the British beaches as a place where social diversity meets. Also, on September 28th, Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci announced that he would be leaving the brand at the end of the month. This was Riccardo's final collection.

"In summer, British beaches become places of democracy and community, where people of all cultures can easily come together and enjoy themselves. I wanted to reflect that ideal of the beach and its emotions throughout the collection, capturing a real-life spirit of fellowship and joy. This collection is inspired by the beach, a place where people meet and different worlds intersect. The tension between dressing and undressing, exposure and protection, undergarments and outerwear, all evoke a sense of the moment and are embedded in the DNA of modern Burberry. This season, we explored a new sensuality, a sense of body awareness. I was inspired by the liberation and freedom of young people who embrace and reveal their bodies, and the pride they take in themselves and their identities. It's freedom itself. This sense of modernity, of authenticity, is what makes Burberry unique."

A spirit of community and unity. Burberry has long been fascinated by inspirations that combine these concepts with a sense of openness and freedom. For his Spring/Summer 2023 collection, Chief Creative Officer Riccardo Tisci drew inspiration from the British seaside – but not from cliffs, sand and shells, but from the beach as a social hub and melting pot of humanity. The beach is a meeting point where different worlds meet, a place where people can come together to purely enjoy and connect with nature. The beach is a place of community and inclusion.

The beach is also a meeting point for social diversity. The clothes in this collection explore ideas and ideals of Britishness: youth and experience, intimacy and public, simplicity and sophistication. Contradictory sensibilities mingle, creating energetic contrasts between ideas and bodies.

The capricious British weather and the British ethos it brings with it inspire a celebration of both cover and reveal, a philosophy of layering that allows for constant freedom in one's skin. The lines of body-conscious swimwear are imprinted on the garments themselves, accentuating the silhouettes of elongated dresses. Tan denim and deconstructed Burberry trench coats hug the body in a relaxed manner.

British fantasy is reinterpreted, seen with fresh eyes, different contexts and new realities. From the gothic unnaturalness of wearing all black on a summer beach to the unreality of an evening dress worn at the beach, this is an image of the British rose minus the thorn.

Inspired by the seaside and based in Burberry's heartland and home of London, the collection reflects the idealism and realism inherent in a reimagined British quintessence.

The Burberry Spring/Summer 2023 runway show featured soprano opera singer Nadine Sierra and the London Contemporary Orchestra performing works by Paul Mealor.
