Ginza Six, the largest commercial facility in the central Tokyo area, will open on April 20, 2017, in two blocks including the former Ginza Matsuzakaya site. A press conference was held at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo on the 26th. Ginza Six is a collaboration between four companies: J. Front Retailing, Mori Building, L Real Estate, and Sumitomo Corporation. Combining each company's expertise, a large-scale complex with a new structure will be born. With a total floor area of approximately 148,700 square meters and a commercial area of 47,000 square meters, the facility boasts an astounding scale. Yoshio Taniguchi was responsible for the architectural and exterior design. Curiosity/Gwenael Nicolas handled the interior design of the commercial facility. The facility will include a shopping floor housing 241 brands, the largest in central Tokyo, a cultural and exchange facility called the Kanze Noh Theater, and a bus stop for tourists. A garden is planned for the rooftop. In addition, a large office floor will be housed, welcoming approximately 3,000 office workers to Ginza.
"We're no longer doing department stores. Rather than evolving the current department stores, we will create a new commercial facility that no one has ever seen before," says Yamamoto Ryoichi, president and CEO of J. Front Retailing Co., Ltd. In order to provide faster, more abundant, and higher-quality service than anywhere else, roughly half of the stores in the facility will be "flagship stores," bringing together stores that hold a special position for the brand. The approximately 115-meter-long road surface facing Ginza's iconic Chuo Dori avenue will be lined with world-renowned luxury brands such as Celine, The House of Dior (tentative name), Van Cleef & Arpels, Fendi, Saint Laurent, and Valentino (tentative name), creating a new face for Ginza with their unique facades. The first floor fashion floor will house bag, jewelry, and watch stores such as Damiani and Loewe, while the second floor will feature bag and shoe stores such as Jimmy Choo, Anya Hindmarch, and Sergio Rossi. The third floor will be a fashion floor featuring international brands such as KENZO, Japan's largest retailer, MOSCHINO, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and N°21, the first brand to open in Ginza. The fourth floor will house fashion and lifestyle stores such as BEAMS HOUSE WOMEN, Yohji Yamamoto's Ground Y, THE CONRAN SHOP, and Nakagawa Masashichi Shoten. The fifth floor will focus on men's fashion, and will be home to N.HOOLYWOOD, SOPH., and one of Asia's largest retailers, HYDROGEN. The sixth floor will feature Ginza's first Tsutaya Bookstore, along with a Starbucks Coffee. The basement level will feature a boutique-style beauty floor, unlike any other department store. Tenants include LIVING NATURE organics, where you can purchase natural cosmetics from New Zealand and France, Aesop, CHANEL, and RMK. Japan's largest Clarins Skin Spa will offer all-hand treatment services. The food floor on the second basement floor will feature the Japanese debut of sweets brand Philippe Conticini, as well as Tokyo's first (tentative) fermented vinegar store, Shobunsu. To mark the facility's opening, an installation by avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama will be displayed in the central atrium, and botanist and artist Patrick Blanc and teamLab will create artworks on two 12-meter walls throughout the building.
