JAL redesigns its summer uniforms for the Okinawa region. Designed by Keita Maruyama

May 14, 2014

The JAL Group has completely redesigned its "Kariyushi Wear" summer uniform for the Okinawa region. The motifs, featuring Okinawa's signature flower, shell ginger, and the prefecture's flower, the deigo, convey a sense of security, kindness, and JAL identity, as well as a distinctly Okinawan feel. The cabin attendants' uniforms also convey a sense of calmness on board, while the ground service staff's uniforms emphasize a spirit of challenge. The design, like the standard JAL Group uniforms revamped in June 2013, was created by Keita Maruyama. The uniforms are instantly recognizable as JAL Group uniforms and feature soft fabric for easy work. The uniforms will be worn by flight attendants on Japan Transocean Air and Ryukyu Air Commuter, as well as ground staff at five airports in the Okinawa region (Naha, Kumejima, Miyako, Ishigaki, and Yonaguni) and two offices in the city. "Kariyushi" means "celebration" in the Okinawan dialect. Kariyushi Wear is the Okinawan version of an aloha shirt, referring only to shirts with distinctive Okinawan patterns and sewn within the prefecture. In addition to its resort-like image, it also has energy-saving effects, so it became popular after the Kyushu-Okinawa Summit held in 2000.
