A first for IKEA in Japan! "Swedish Bites," a deli where you can enjoy bulk orders, opens at IKEA Shinjuku on May 17th

May 16, 2021
IKEA Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture; President and Chief Sustainability Officer: Helen von Reiss), the Japanese subsidiary of IKEA, a Swedish home furnishing company with a vision of "creating a better everyday life for the many people," will open "Swedish Bite," the first deli menu item sold by weight at IKEA Japan, on the first floor of IKEA Shinjuku on May 17, 2021, with COVID-19 prevention and spread prevention measures in place.

IKEA offers Swedish food at affordable prices to make the IKEA shopping experience more enjoyable and fulfilling for many people. To help enrich the time people spend at home, which has increased more than ever before, IKEA Japan launched a takeout service last year. IKEA Shinjuku's "Swedish Bites," opening on May 17th, is a new takeout-only store format. It offers a familiar system for Japanese customers, allowing customers to easily purchase only the amount they want, catering to a variety of urban lifestyles. This is the first time IKEA has implemented this system. The opening of "Swedish Bites" allows customers in urban areas to easily enjoy the Nordic flavors popular at IKEA restaurants on takeout. Enjoy browsing the menu items in the window, just like in a department store basement, and takeaway for lunch or dinner at home or at the office. The takeout menu includes not only the traditional Swedish dishes popular at IKEA restaurants, but also a variety of sustainable options that are good for both body and the planet, such as plant-based lasagna and plant balls, which use plant-based ingredients instead of meat; "Shrimp Potato Salad with Dill Mayo" made with MSC-certified shrimp; and "Salmon Marinated in Grabbad Sauce" made with ASC-certified salmon. In addition to the limited-time menu item "Blue Plant-Based Apple Soft Serve," there will also be a wide selection of side dishes such as plant-based keema curry, cinnamon rolls, and the traditional Swedish dish Zunbröd, and bakery products and a variety of drinks will also be available for purchase.

IKEA is committed to reducing global food waste by 50% by December 2021, and as part of this effort, Swedish Bites will be introducing a food waste monitoring tool that utilizes AI technology.
(The tool is also scheduled to be introduced at the Swedish Restaurant in IKEA Shibuya at the same time.)

In addition, Swedish Bites will be implementing the following measures to prevent the infection and spread of COVID-19. IKEA will strive to ensure that customers can enjoy their meals with peace of mind.

Countermeasures against the new coronavirus
・ Co-workers (employees) are required to wear masks
・ Co-workers are required to wash and disinfect their hands
・ Co-workers' temperatures are taken before shifts
・ Equipment that customers come into contact with is replaced and disinfected every hour
・ Disinfectant is provided for customers
・ Admission restrictions are implemented depending on the situation inside the store
*In addition to the above, please be aware that new measures may be taken to ensure the safety and security of customers and co-workers depending on the situation, or in accordance with government policy.
