Architect Antoni Gaudi was born on June 25, 1852, in Catalonia, Spain. He died on June 10, 1926.
From 1873 to 1877, he studied architecture in Barcelona while gaining experience at an architectural firm. He qualified as an architect in 1878, and his talent was recognized by the wealthy Eusebio Güell when he designed a showcase for the "Cumella Glove Shop" exhibited at the Paris World's Fair that same year. Güell then served as Gaudi's patron for approximately 40 years, commissioning numerous architectural projects.
Known for his designs that make extensive use of curved lines and decorative elements of plants, animals, monsters, and humans, he influenced many architects and artists. The Crypt of the Church of Colonia Güell is his masterpiece, where his celebration of nature is most evident. Its sloping columns and walls, rough-hewn stone, and dazzling colors of light and shadow create a cave-like space. In 1983, he was appointed chief architect of the Sagrada Família, and spent over 40 years designing the building. From 1917, he gave up all other work to devote himself to it. He died at the age of 74 after being hit by a tram on June 10, 1926. His body was buried in the Sagrada Família. Considered the most revolutionary architect in history, his works, including Park Güell and Casa Mila, were registered as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1984. The "Special Exhibition: Gaudí x Takehiko Inoue - Synchronized Sources of Creativity," to be held at the Mori Arts Center Gallery in Roppongi from July 12 to September 7, will feature approximately 110 valuable exhibits looking back on Gaudí's achievements.
