IKEA Japan, the Japanese subsidiary of IKEA, the Swedish home furnishing company with a vision of "creating a better everyday life for the many people," will launch "TUNNBRÖD," a traditional Swedish flatbread topped with ingredients, at IKEA Harajuku, its first urban store opening on June 8th. IKEA Harajuku is the only IKEA store in the world where you can eat "TUNNBRÖD."
IKEA will launch a new menu item, "TUNNBRÖD," at IKEA Harajuku, its first urban store. IKEA aims to offer a modern and unique dining experience, and to deliver mouth-watering menus that meet the needs of urban dwellers. This new menu item, "TUNNBRÖD," is a modern take on the traditional Swedish dish of flatbread. Made entirely from plant-based ingredients such as wheat and rye, flatbread is a traditional Swedish dish as historic and cherished as crispbread, meatballs, and salmon. This flatbread is topped with healthy and sustainable ingredients such as veggie sausage and salmon, giving it a modern Swedish flair. At IKEA Harajuku, you can choose from 16 different menu items to suit your taste.
"We see the new IKEA format in urban areas as a great opportunity to offer modern, inspired food in a flexible way. IKEA Food has played an important role in the IKEA concept since 1959, when the first IKEA restaurant opened in Älmhult, Sweden, to the present day. With the addition of Bistros and Swedish Food Markets, serving snacks and food, in all IKEA stores, we believe the shopping experience at IKEA stores is now even more enjoyable and fulfilling."
(Michael La Cour, IKEA Food Business Leader, IKEA of Sweden AB)
A simple flatbread has a long history in northern Sweden. In the past, thin, round flatbreads served as plates. Rolled very thin with a special rolling pin, the flatbread was baked until crispy and stored for months, or baked briefly to enjoy the soft, fresh flatbread. Today, this soft flatbread is often rolled up and taken on the go, making it a delicious and convenient dish for a meal or dessert.
"We developed our new menu item, TUNNBRÖD, to cater to the busy shopping environment of urban areas. We combined classic Swedish traditions with the modern, urban style of Tokyo. We were inspired not only by Japanese influences, but also by the diverse and delicious IKEA Food. Many people in Tokyo are very interested in food and want to try new things. We want to offer a traditional Swedish dish, flatbread, in a modern style that is new and unique to the market!"
(Chef Alexander Magnusson, Project Leader for New Concepts and Innovation for IKEA Food business)
