Courtesy of GucciGucci is pleased to announce a special collaboration with HOSOO, one of the oldest makers of Nishijin textiles, a traditional Kyoto craft. Crafted from textiles woven by artisans who have inherited traditional techniques in Nishijin, located in the northwest of Kyoto, Gucci artisans in Florence have created this handbag with Gucci's iconic bamboo handle.

In 2021, Gucci celebrated its 100th anniversary and held special events in Kyoto to mark the start of a new century. One of these events was the Gucci Bamboo House, an experiential exhibition themed on tradition and creativity, featuring bamboo-handled handbags.

Courtesy of GucciThis latest collaboration celebrates the beauty and historical value of Nishijin-ori, while also elevating our ties to Kyoto through a unique creation, through the pursuit of its sophisticated craftsmanship and artistry. Nishijin-ori is a type of yarn-dyed patterned fabric that dates back to the Heian period (approximately 1,200 years ago). Supported by aristocrats, the samurai class, and even wealthy townspeople, its elegant beauty has evolved over the years. It takes more than 20 steps to complete, each performed by a specialized artisan, to express the unique patterns and textures within its complex, three-dimensional structure. Due to its nobility, rarity, and high artistic quality, reminiscent of high jewelry, it was once a symbol of the wearer's nobility, status, and wealth.

The textile, which features Gucci's iconic motifs woven into the elegantly lustrous silk threads and gold and silver leaf characteristic of Nishijin-ori, breathes new life into the Gucci Bamboo 1947 and Gucci Diana bags and exudes a beauty that transcends time and space.

Courtesy of GucciMasataka Hosoo, the 12th generation creative director of HOSOO, had this to say about this project:
"Rather than simply expressing Gucci motifs in Nishijin weaving, weaving them into our original textile design was a new and advanced challenge, both technically and expressively. However, after repeated trial and error with the artisans, we were able to create something beyond our imagination. It is my greatest joy to have been able to discover new possibilities for Nishijin weaving together with Gucci. I also hope that this textile will inspire Gucci's artisans."

Gucci Bamboo 1947
A contemporary reinterpretation of the bamboo-handled handbag that has defined Gucci's history, the Gucci Bamboo 1947 represents Gucci's past, present, and future. In 1947, during the post-war period in Italy, when the quality raw materials needed for Gucci products were scarce, founder Guccio Gucci embraced the innovative ideas of Florentine artisans to create lightweight, durable bamboo bag handles. The Bamboo bag quickly gained attention and became a favorite of Hollywood actresses and jet-setters, cementing its status as an innovative and iconic bag internationally.
Gucci Diana
The Gucci Diana handbag line, introduced as part of the Ouverture collection, is a new interpretation of the bamboo-handle tote bag first introduced in 1991. The new design features a detachable leather strap inspired by the original bag's handle band, which maintained its shape. The Gucci Diana silhouette evokes a time when practicality was paramount in fashion, while simultaneously celebrating timeless appeal and embodying evolving concepts of style.
