New Gucci x Tadanori Yokoo installation to be unveiled in Osaka and Teshima, home of the Setouchi Triennale

Jun 12, 2025
Following the success of the exhibition "Tadanori Yokoo: Unfinished Self-Portraits - A Journey to Myself" at the Gucci Ginza Gallery in Tokyo's Ginza district, Gucci has expanded its collaboration with artist Tadanori Yokoo from Tokyo to the Setouchi region and Osaka, presenting a new installation.

The exhibition, which began in April, is curated by art critic Yusuke Minami and is centered around the theme of "unfinished." Of the approximately 30 works on display, six are newly created, featuring self-portraits and family, forming the core of the exhibition. Additionally, Yokoo's bright red scaffolding installation, which symbolically represented the image of "unfinished" at the 1970 Osaka Expo, has been recreated in the atrium and rooftop of the Gucci Ginza Gallery, and its dynamic worldview is once again eliciting great acclaim. This "unfinished" spirit has been carried over to Teshima, one of the locations for the Setouchi Triennale 2025, where a new art wall was unveiled on May 22nd as part of the latest collaboration with Yokoo.

The Setouchi Triennale, held every three years, is an international contemporary art festival set on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Against a backdrop of local culture and history that coexists with nature, a diverse range of works are presented by artists from Japan and abroad. This year, Gucci becomes the first fashion brand to serve as an official partner of the Setouchi Triennale.

Meanwhile, in 2013, Yokoo opened the Teshima Yokoo House (operated by the Fukutake Foundation) on Teshima, the site of the Setouchi Triennale 2025. The building was renovated from a former private home, and Yokoo was in charge of the overall concept. The experiential exhibition space, which integrates artwork, architecture, and space, has become one of Teshima's iconic spots as a permanent art facility.

This new art wall, in conjunction with the solo exhibition at the Gucci Ginza Gallery, is an installation that expresses "incompleteness" on an even more impressive scale. Furthermore, this "incomplete"-themed installation is also being displayed at Gucci Osaka, the Shinsaibashi Daimaru Gucci Shop, and the Shinsaibashi Daimaru Gucci Satellite Shop.
