The curves of the slender, egg-shaped case: two new timepieces from Breguet

Nov 28, 2022
Breguet presents two new timepieces. While boasting different styles, they share a common thread: the minute hand changes shape as it moves across the dial, bringing a new accent to this iconic collection.

The iconic "Reine de Naples" collection for women was inspired by the first wristwatch delivered to Napoleon's sister, Queen Caroline Murat, in 1812. The collection is instantly recognizable by the curves of its slender, oval case. Each model in this contemporary collection is a celebration of femininity, featuring diamond-set, hand-engraved, and even lacquered finishes. This new interpretation from the Maison Breguet exudes a sense of originality without straying from its originality.

The trajectory of the hands

The dials of these two new models feature a flexible, variable minute hand that attracts admiration and attention. Thanks to a magical and ingenious mechanism, this hand changes shape depending on its position on the oval dial. This unprecedented mechanism, which benefits from multiple patents, is a creation that bears the Breguet name. The variable-length minute hand is formed by two arms that are linked at the tips but operate independently. These arms are transformed by an ingenious gear train. The minute hand thus takes on various shapes across the dial, extending at 12 o'clock and becoming more rounded at 6 o'clock. The mechanism responsible for this optical illusion is equipped with an egg-shaped cam that echoes the unique curves of the Reine of Naples watch. Each arm functions at a different speed as the minutes tick by. The shape of the hand thus constantly changes with its movement, perfectly adapting to the shape of the timepiece.

Two Beauties, Each Unique Character

Alluring Elegance

The white gold case contrasts elegantly with the midnight blue mother-of-pearl dial, whose subtle hues change with the light. The flange, bezel, and lugs are set with 161 diamonds, the crown features a briolette-cut diamond, and the folding buckle is set with 28 diamonds. The time is cleverly displayed in an aperture in the center of the dial. The minute indicators, with a typographical style reminiscent of hand-drawn drawings, are printed and covered with silver-colored powder. This version is presented on an alligator strap that matches the color of the dial. Limited to 20 pieces.

A play on proportions

The white lacquer dial contrasts with the midnight blue alligator strap. The white gold case features the bezel, flange, and crown set with blue sapphires. The various components of the dial appear to dance above the watch. The Arabic numerals expand and contract, just like the minute hand's trajectory.

Two timepieces, one movement

Inside the 36.5 x 28.45 mm egg-shaped case, 252 components power the 78A0 automatic movement, which beats at a frequency of 3.5 Hz. The movement is equipped with a silicon balance spring and in-line Swiss lever escapement. Silicon's numerous properties include corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and the ability to eliminate the effects of magnetic fields, improving the watch's precision. Like all of the caliber's components, the gear train of this complication is meticulously handcrafted in accordance with Breguet tradition, even down to the parts not visible. The white gold case has a sapphire caseback revealing the platinum oscillating weight, Côtes de Genève decoration, and beveled movement. The gold case is engraved with a serial number that has been recorded in the Maison Breguet archives since the end of the 18th century.
