This spring and summer, bright colors, often referred to as neon and vitamin colors, are all the rage. Especially when it comes to bottoms, it's rare to see such a trend in colorful pants for both men and women. Meanwhile, the recent fall/winter collections in Europe and the United States saw a resurgence of black as a trend. When visiting domestic fall/winter apparel exhibitions for both men's and women's fashion, a common question that comes up is, "Will black really be as popular this fall as people in the West say?" Apparel planners and salespeople wonder whether monochrome, primarily black, will become the trend this fall, a stark reversal of the current trend for colorful styles. Ohga's men's brand, "Katherine Hamnett London," is using black, navy blue, and beige as base colors for its fall/winter collection, with accents of royal blue and slightly muted red and orange. "We believe the trend for colorful items will continue into this fall/winter season, albeit in muted tones," he says. Casual pants brands are likely struggling the most. Currently, the three most popular styles are white pants, floral pants, and colored pants. Whether this trend continues into fall and winter will determine the company's performance. The Blueway Division of Blue Works Company, which operates the men's brand "Blueway" and the women's brand "et Boite," saw strong sales of colored pants for both men and women this spring and summer, with production of bright colors like pink and yellow particularly struggling to keep up. Other strong sales include women's floral pants and white jeans for both men and women, but blue jeans have been slow to move. This has led to increased focus on colored pants this fall and winter. While muted colors and floral pants were well-received at fall and winter trade shows, white pants also received better reviews than usual. Considering the reaction at trade shows and the trend toward monotone black, white bottoms may have potential for growth.
