Hong Kong is synonymous with gourmet food! Authentic Cantonese cuisine, as well as a wide variety of cuisines from around the world, are available. On this trip, we'll introduce you to Hong Kong's "High & Low" gourmet experiences, from restaurants frequented by sophisticated, fashionable crowds to ultra-local eateries not yet featured in guidebooks.
Located near Man Mo Temple in Old Town Central, Happy Paradise serves sophisticated and high-quality "Neo-Cantonese" cuisine. "Neo-Cantonese" cuisine is an upgraded version of Cantonese cuisine using French cooking techniques. Chef Mei Chow is a talented chef who was named the top female chef in Asia. Born and raised in both the United States and Hong Kong, she possesses a boyish sexuality and a unique fashion sense, and her individuality is reflected in the restaurant's interior and concept. The neon lights, round tables reminiscent of those found in mahjong parlors and saunas, and steel chairs create a bar or club-like atmosphere. This is a unique dining experience, where you can dine on innovative Cantonese cuisine with hip-hop and rock music playing in the background.
The must-try here is the "Steamed Chicken in Yellow Wine" (HK$328). Each cut is cooked at the optimum temperature - 54°C for the breast and 85°C for the legs - to maximize the flavor and texture of the tender meat, which melts in your mouth. Pour this over the black mushroom, Shaoxing wine, and chrysanthemum soup, and you'll find yourself eating endless amounts - it's dangerously delicious! It also comes with chunky fried rice, making it a great final dish. We also enjoyed Chow's neo-Cantonese cuisine, ordering around eight dishes from the à la carte menu, including the "Fluffy Egg Char Siu Rice Bowl" (HK$158), roasted Iberian pork served with rice and a fried egg (egg white only) and drizzled in a soy yolk sauce; "Grilled Pineapple Sweet and Sour Pork" (HK$158), a pineapple-shaped dish containing sweet and sour pork cheek; "Scallop Cheung Fun" (HK$110), scallops stretched into a thin sheet like a Cantonese rice roll called cheung fun and topped with a spicy sauce; and "Steamed Egg" (HK$78), a Cantonese version of chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) with a refreshing green, sour sauce.
"Happy Paradise" is also known for its distinctive drinks, which include original cocktails (from HK$88) created by mixologist Chanel Adams, made from a combination of Hong Kong fruits, vegetables, and herbs. They also have a wide selection of wines and champagnes, so why not enjoy them with your meal?
