Akita Oga "Morinaga Ryokan" - A one-of-a-kind "kura sauna" renovated from a tangible cultural property storehouse

Aug 25, 2025
Morinaga Ryokan, located in Oga City, Akita Prefecture, has a history of over 95 years and will celebrate its grand opening in the spring of 2025. This traditional inn, which has welcomed local travelers for around 70 years, has all three buildings - the main building, annex, and storehouse - registered as national tangible cultural properties. This summer, Morinaga Ryokan, which offers a stay where you can experience the history and culture of the region in a time-honored building, has added a new charm to its offering.

Experience "totonoa" in a space steeped in history
The symbol of the inn is "NAMOMI SAUNA KURA," a renovated storehouse that is over 100 years old. The sauna stones are made from local Oga "kanaishi" stone, and the interior is made of Aomori cypress. Guests can enjoy experiences that combine nature and tradition, such as self-loyly and a wooden tub bath filled with water from the famous "Takinotashira" spring.

"Namomi" refers to the red patterns that appear on the skin when you stay near a hearth for too long. Inspired by the legend of the "Namahage of Oga," who are said to strip away this "Namomi," we have elevated the "sweetness" of the sauna to "seiyo." The experience of wearing an original Namahage-themed sauna hat is something special that can only be had here.

Comfortable guest rooms that retain their charm
You can stay in guest rooms that have been comfortably appointed while making the most of the charm unique to this cultural property. The special twin rooms are luxuriously designed with a private kitchen and windows overlooking the garden. The standard twin rooms are Japanese-style rooms with a wide veranda, and you can enjoy the changing scenery of the four seasons in an atmosphere typical of a ryokan.

A lodging with a fashionable sensibility that connects culture to the future
Morinaga Ryokan offers more than just a lodging experience. It is imbued with an "editorial" sensibility that beautifully preserves old things while renovating them in a modern way, a sensibility that is also connected to the spirit of fashion. Set in a cultural asset building, travelers can feel as if they are wearing the history and culture of the area.
