Sou Fujimoto's design of architecture that blends in with the tropical landscape. NOT A HOTEL ISHIGAKI "EARTH" is born

Jul 15, 2025
In July 2025, a new building was born on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa. It was designed by architect Sou Fujimoto, who also serves as the venue design producer for the 2025 Osaka-Kansai Expo. Named "NOT A HOTEL ISHIGAKI 'EARTH'," this special villa stands quietly alone on a site of approximately 10,000 square meters.

The white, circular villa blends seamlessly with nature
The building's most distinctive features are its circular floor plan and unique bowl-shaped form, which slopes from the rooftop to the courtyard. This shape makes it seem as if the building blends into the ocean and green scenery even from inside the building, as if it were part of the landscape.

The exterior is unified in an all-white color, and its appearance in the sunlight beautifully accentuates the contrast with the sky and ocean. Each face of the facade has been carefully finished by hand by artisans, giving it an appearance that exudes the warmth of craftsmanship.

A relaxed sense of unity where even large groups can stay comfortably
With a total floor area of approximately 1,500 m², the building is the largest in the NOT A HOTEL series. Equipped with four separate bedrooms, a living/dining room, pool, sauna, gym, kids' pool, fireplace and more, it can comfortably accommodate up to 10 people.

The central courtyard is a particularly impressive space. Thanks to its bowl-shaped structure, when you stand there, all you can see is the sky, greenery, and the sea, creating a feeling of being immersed in nature. The planting plan was overseen by landscape architect Taichi Saito, and it blends beautifully with the surrounding nature.

A dialogue between architecture and the environment, where you can feel the breeze of Ishigaki Island
An unobstructed view of the horizon stretches out from the living and dining room, and the sunset view is like a painting. The infinity pool, which is seamlessly connected to the living room, allows you to spend special moments feeling one with the sea.

The sauna on the first floor is designed so that light filtering in through the water basin pours down through a skylight, creating a tranquil space that makes you feel as if you are at the bottom of the ocean. There is also a gym on site, perfect for resetting your mind and body.

In addition, there is a water basin in front of each bedroom, with a tranquil sea view beyond. This architecture is imbued with a luxurious feeling, as if living as part of nature.

NOT A HOTEL ISHIGAKI "EARTH" is more than just an accommodation facility. What Sou Fujimoto has envisioned for this site is a new type of home that gently blends the boundaries between nature, people, and architecture, creating a seamless connection. It will be a place that gently blends into the landscape of Ishigaki Island and remains in people's memories.
