To achieve quantitative targets for environmental conservation, Kering has implemented two tools with the cooperation of academics, experts, and NGOs. One is a tool for measuring environmental impact called the Environmental Profit and Loss Account (EP&L). While carbon dioxide emissions are typically measured in tons and wastewater in liters, Kering expresses everything in monetary units, such as dollars and euros. This method simplifies communication with the finance department and aids in corporate risk management. (Note: Puma, a member of the group, already published its EP&L in 2010.) Adopting this common indicator across the group and its brands will help prioritize investments, identify measures to reduce environmental impact, and improve cost performance. Kering believes this approach distinguishes itself from the 20th-century capitalist business model and opens up new business opportunities.
"Our current mission is to create a group-level EP&L by 2016 at the latest," Davo said.
Later, Kering released a press release announcing that it had received an A rating in the 2014 Climate Performance Leadership Index (CPLI) published by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the only nonprofit organization with a global database of corporate climate change initiatives. This A rating was given to only 187 companies worldwide, demonstrating Kering's sincere efforts.
Another initiative is the Material Innovation Lab (MIL), which aims to reduce environmental impact. MIL is based in a laboratory on the outskirts of Milan, where it identifies the most sustainable raw materials (such as organic cotton and wool) and conducts research on textile manufacturing processes (dyeing and tanning methods). The raw materials developed by MIL are then proposed to the group's brands.
The topic of climate change, which is causing large typhoons and major floods due to global warming, is frequently featured in the news and on TV information programs. At the end of 2015, COP21 will be held in Paris to discuss global climate change and measures to combat global warming from 2020 onwards. Environmental consideration has become an issue that every consumer cannot avoid.
