A "Maniac" Hokkaido Exhibition is being held at Shinjuku Isetan. Tour Hokkaido with bread

Jan 31, 2015

Isetan Shinjuku Store will be holding the "Great Hokkaido Exhibition," a product exhibition showcasing Hokkaido gourmet food, from February 4th to 9th in the event hall on the sixth floor of the main building. This time, the store will be focusing on "Hokkaido bread for enthusiasts," showcasing everything from bread recommended by bread coordinators to bakeries selected by local bread connoisseurs.

Bread lovers must see the "Hokkaido Bread Marche" corner, where Mori Mayumi, who is based in Sapporo and is also known as a bread coordinator and promotes the appeal of bread, has collected bread from all over Hokkaido. The event will feature a variety of breads, including donuts (246 yen) from Fuwamochitei (Sapporo), a donut and bagel specialty shop known only to locals, pain de sèvres (513 yen) from Sokeshu Bakery (Kimobetsu Town), and noisette fromage (709 yen) from Baker's Terrace 689 (Eniwa City), all appearing for the first time at the store.

Pullman Bakery (Sapporo City) will be selling scallop white curry bread (241 yen), with a limit of 100 per day. The crispy batter and creamy white curry melt in your mouth. The scallops inside are said to be popular among locals. The Viandou (511 yen) from Boulangerie Paume, also based in Sapporo, is filled with a slow-cooked Shiraoi beef stew and is said to pair perfectly with wine. Mugioto (Obihiro City), a bakery and cafe with wheat fields on a vast site in the Tokachi Plain, will debut with a Tokachi Poirot and Mushroom Pizza (1,500 yen). The dough is made with Kitano Kaori Tokachi wheat, and the pizza is topped with richly flavored Tokachi mash mushrooms and Tokachi Poirot (green onions). There will also be a demonstration by a baker, so you can enjoy a piping hot pizza. Of course, since this is a Hokkaido exhibition, there's more to it than just bread. Seafood, a specialty of Hokkaido products, is also available. The highly anticipated dish is the Sea Urchin Taste Comparison (2,800 yen) at Sushidokoro Ryubin (Sapporo). This limited-edition plate features 200 varieties of raw sea urchin, seared sea urchin, and sea urchin marinated in miso lees, all served in temari-sized nigiri balls, and even includes sea urchin chocolate for dessert.

For sweets, we recommend the Love Pudding Cake (372 yen) from Otaru's Le Quatrieme. This traditional Scottish cake is based on a recipe by Rita Taketsuru, wife of Masataka Taketsuru, who is gaining attention for his role in the NHK morning drama series Massan, and is flavored with whiskey.
